Nicosia, Cyprus. Nicosia For Art, in collaboration with National Theatre Live, will screen the filmed version of the theatre production Dr Strangelove by Stanley Kubrick on February 27 at the Municipal Theatre of Nicosia. The screening will be presented in Cyprus only once.
London stage production brought to Nicosia
The stage adaptation is co-adapted by Armando Iannucci and Sean Foley, and directed by Foley. It is described by organisers as honouring Kubrick’s legacy and the enduring relevance of the story 60 years after the original 1964 film.
Plot and creative team
Based on Kubrick’s Cold War comedy, the story centres on a rogue American general who triggers a nuclear attack, prompting a race against time as the government and an eccentric scientist attempt to prevent a global catastrophe. The creative team includes Emmy Award-winner Iannucci (The Thick of It, Veep) and two-time Olivier Award-winner Foley (The Upstart Crow).
Cast and roles
Steve Coogan stars in the stage adaptation, taking on roles originally played by Peter Sellers. In Kubrick’s 1964 film, Sellers played three roles: Dr Strangelove, Captain Mandrake and President Muffley. In the stage adaptation, Coogan plays four roles, adding Major TJ Kong in the final act.
Background and screening details
The original film is based on the novel Red Alert by Peter George, which does not include the dark comedic elements or the character of Dr Strangelove. The screening will be shown in its original English language on February 27 at 8.30pm at Nicosia Municipal Theatre, with tickets priced at €7 and available on More.com.
