Nicosia, Cyprus. Nicosia district governor Constantinos Yiorkadjis said the new district self-government organisations (EOA) have produced significant work during their first 18 months, while noting further work remains in the district. He highlighted the need to manage the restored Kotsiatis landfill and the biogas trapped in it.
Kotsiatis landfill biogas management
Speaking to mark his 18 months in the post, Yiorkadjis said transforming biogas into green power would relieve communities affected by the landfill’s operation, while reducing the EOA’s dependence on electricity and its carbon footprint. He said that properly managing biogas would stop it being burned through a flare and burdening the area.
Water supply network and repairs
Yiorkadjis said the water supply network is 2,565km long, 115km longer than in 2024, and serves more than 170,000 water meters. He said efforts are being made to save water with smart systems and increase water storage capacity, adding that 8,248 faults have been repaired since the EOA was set up.
Sewerage projects and tenders
The Nicosia sewerage system is 1,645km long, and Yiorkadjis said improvements in both urban and rural areas are planned for 2026. He said a tender will be announced for sewage works in north Nicosia-Dhali and in Kato Pyrgos Tillyrias, worth about €85 million. He added that a tender launched for reconstructing the central sewage pipe in Mia Milia and laying pipes to return processed water to the south was considered a “huge success”.
Rainwater drainage and flood risk reduction
Yiorkadjis said the Nicosia EOA has taken over management of rainwater drainage systems and has cleaned 15km of pipes and changed a large number of grids to reduce flood risk. He said anti-flood works are also planned for 2026, with particular importance placed on repairing the covered Kotsirkas river under Digenis Akritas avenue.
