Nicosia, Cyprus. A 28-year-old police officer died after his motorcycle collided with a car driven by a 23-year-old woman late on Friday night in the Engomi district of Nicosia.
Crash on Griva Digeni Avenue
The incident occurred on Griva Digeni Avenue at around 10.20pm, when the officer, named as Andreas Antoniou, collided with the woman’s vehicle under unclear circumstances. Antoniou was travelling on a motorcycle and was wearing a helmet.
Death confirmed at hospital
Antoniou, who was serving in the drug squad YKAN, was taken by ambulance to Nicosia general hospital, where doctors determined his death.
Driver tested and arrested
The driver was subjected to alcohol and drug tests, both of which came back negative. She was subsequently arrested under a court warrant to facilitate the investigation.
Public appeal for information
Police appealed to anyone with information to contact them via the Citizens Hotline on 1460 or at their local police station.
