Larnaca, Cyprus. More than six kilograms of opium poppies were seized after being found inside a package sent to Larnaca airport, the customs department said on Friday. Police later arrested the package’s 35-year-old addressee and his 31-year-old wife as part of the investigation.
Package search at airport
The customs department said the package had a “suspicious description and recipient” and was therefore searched after arriving at Larnaca airport. Inside, officers found 30 packages of poppies weighing 6.3kg in total.
Arrests and home search
The package was seized, and police arrested its 35-year-old addressee on Friday. During a search of his home, officers found and seized 22 more packages of opium poppies weighing around four kilograms in total, along with “processing instruments and equipment”.
Investigation ongoing
The 35-year-old man’s wife, aged 31, was also arrested as part of the same investigation. Police said the investigation is ongoing.
