Nicosia, Cyprus. Outgoing United States ambassador in Nicosia Julie Davis said she was proud of what was achieved during her term as she met President Nikos Christodoulides for a farewell meeting on Monday.
Assessment of US-Cyprus cooperation
Davis said it had been “a remarkable two years” in terms of what the two sides had done together for the people of the United States and Cyprus, adding that there was more to be done.
She said the progress was not due to any one person, but to groups of people on both sides of the relationship, which she said would continue to move forward.
Security and citizen protection
Davis said the two sides had done a great deal to protect their citizens and that cooperation on security had been particularly important given recent events.
People-to-people and business ties
Davis said she was particularly proud of efforts to bring Americans and Cypriots together to better understand each other.
She also pointed to efforts to connect the two countries’ business communities, including American businesses finding success in Cyprus and Cypriot companies expanding into the United States.
Successor nomination
Davis said John Breslow, nominated by US President Donald Trump to succeed her, was “fantastic” and looking forward to coming to Cyprus, adding that he would be a partner for Cyprus. Breslow’s nomination is subject to a vote in the US Senate.
Dual role in Kyiv
Davis, who has served since last year in the dual role of US ambassador in Nicosia and charge d’affaires in Kyiv, said she had informed Christodoulides that she would remain in Ukraine until the end of June.
What do you think will be the next priorities in US-Cyprus relations after Davis’s departure?
