Pace president says Cyprus remains “a safe country” during Nicosia visit

Nicosia, Cyprus. President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (Pace) Petra Bayr said on Monday that Cyprus remains “a safe country” as she visited Nicosia and expressed solidarity with Cyprus and its people.

Meeting in Nicosia

Bayr, heading the Pace presidential committee, met President Nikos Christodoulides to discuss the Cyprus problem, the war against Iran and Cyprus’ priorities during its EU presidency. Christodoulides said Cyprus’ role has always been humanitarian and that security remained a top priority for Europe.

Message from Pace officials

Akel MP Yiorgos Loukaides, present as chairman of the Left group at Pace, said the presence of Pace officials in Cyprus sent “a strong message that Cyprus remains a safe destination”. He said the discussion, held in the presence of the heads of all Pace political groups, was “constructive”.

Values and international law

Bayr said Pace defends values such as democracy, human rights and the state of law. She said international law and world order were under attack due to wars and the effort of some superpowers to impose their supremacy over international law.

Concerns over the war against Iran

Bayr said there were concerns over the continuing war against Iran and the increasing involvement of Europe. She said the delegation was in Cyprus to express solidarity with Cyprus and its people, adding that Cyprus remains a safe place.

What do you think the Pace visit signals about international support for Cyprus?
