Paphos, Cyprus. Deputy mayor Angelos Onisiforou said on Wednesday that the municipality of Paphos is continuing its regular operations without interruptions. He called for calm and cooperation as scrutiny continues following allegations made public against mayor Phedonas Phedonos.
Municipal operations and cooperation
Onisiforou said he is optimistic that, together with the municipal council, measures to benefit the city can be implemented in a spirit of cooperation.
Appeal for neutrality and trust in institutions
He said he trusts the judiciary system as “the only ones competent to investigate the allegations” and appealed to the media to maintain a neutral stance so as not to fuel tensions in the city. “Paphos needs calm, unity, and meaningful work,” he said.
Allegations against the mayor
The municipality has been in the media spotlight after allegations of domestic violence and rape were made public against Phedonos in late January. Phedonos’ wife has rejected the accusations against her husband and called for the police to suspend their investigations.
How do you think local authorities and media should balance transparency and calm during high-profile allegations?
