Paphos district governor says drinking water is “top quality” after residents report smell

Paphos, Cyprus. Paphos district governor Charalambos Pittokopitis said the district’s drinking water is “top quality” after some residents complained about its smell. He said inspections of tanks and the network found no problems and confirmed the water is suitable for consumption.

Response to complaints and inspection findings

Pittokopitis told the Cyprus News Agency that after the complaints were made, the district government carried out thorough inspections of the water tanks and the water network in the affected areas. He said the inspections did not reveal any problems and that the water was deemed “top quality” and “absolutely suitable for consumption.”

He described the complaints as isolated incidents but said they were treated seriously. He said checks covered both water tanks and the network points supplied by them, and that analyses did not show any alteration in the odour, colour, or chemical and microbiological composition of the water.

Ongoing monitoring

Pittokopitis said the district government would continue to closely monitor the situation to ensure drinking water quality on a permanent basis and to address any issue that may arise. He said the health and safety of residents is a priority for the Paphos district government.

Earlier concerns linked to wastewater and sludge issues

Bad smells linked to the district’s water supply have been reported in recent years. In 2024, the Ierokipia municipality complained of a “large volume of sewage” flowing into the sea from the district’s water treatment plant near the village of Acheleia.

Previously, a build-up of dried sludge at the plant led to odours that prompted a delegation from the House energy committee to visit and investigate. Paphos mayor Phedonas Phedonos said at the time that sludge is typically transported to a private company and then to Vasiliko for incineration, and that the smell occurred because the unit’s manager stored the sludge for a few days due to problems with the transport contractor.
