Paphos, Cyprus. The lack of a refrigerator to store dead bodies in the morgue at Paphos general hospital needs to be resolved immediately, town mayor Angelos Onisiforou said on Tuesday.
Morgue refrigeration out of operation
Onisiforou said the absence of proper storage facilities means bodies are being transferred to Limassol, adding pressure on families already facing a difficult time and potentially causing further suffering and stress.
He said Paphos has only three licensed funeral homes, all with limited refrigeration capacity, and that they cannot continue to cover what he described as a responsibility belonging to the competent state services.
Call for immediate repair
According to Onisiforou, the damage to the morgue refrigerator could be repaired by replacing a compressor.
He said the district is meanwhile left without basic infrastructure for the dignified management of the dead and called for the problem to be fixed without further delays.
The statement came after refrigeration units used to preserve bodies at Paphos general hospital have been out of operation since last week.
