Paphos mayor trial adjourned until September 10

Paphos, Cyprus. The trial concerning suspended Paphos mayor Phedonas Phedonos, who is accused of rape and domestic abuse, was adjourned until September 10 after the prosecution was unable to secure the attendance of additional witnesses.


Witness testimony

The hearing continued behind closed doors on Thursday and had been due to resume on Friday.

According to the Cyprus News Agency, about 10 prosecution witnesses have testified so far. A further 18 witnesses were initially expected to give evidence, although the total number is now expected to be limited to 20.

The complainant is among those expected to testify at the next hearings.

Charges

Members of the investigative team have already testified during the presentation of evidence, while the summoning of witnesses continued this week.

The former Paphos mayor faces five charges relating to rape and indecent assault against a woman. He is also accused of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and of administering a drug or other substance capable of drugging or neutralising a person’s power of resistance.
