Paphos warns of legal action over damage at new Historical Documentation Centre

Paphos, Cyprus. Acting mayor Angelos Onisiforou said strict measures will be taken against anyone damaging the not-yet-opened Historical Documentation Centre in Paphos, including skateboarders. He said those who enter the site and cause damage will be reported to the police, and the municipality will pursue legal action.

Damage reported at centre

Onisiforou said damage has been caused to marble surfaces, corners, railings and other fixtures at the centre by scooters, skateboards and other vehicles.

He described the acts as vandalism and said the site is not a stunt park or a recreational area for such activities.

Call for respect for cultural space

He said the centre is a space dedicated to culture and historical memory and requires respect from everyone.

Onisiforou added that there are other spaces in the city for sports and recreation, but said public cultural spaces cannot be turned into places of destruction and disrespect.

Project location and funding

The Paphos Historical Documentation Centre is located at the former Paphos police headquarters near Kennedy Square.

It will feature exhibits covering the city’s history dating back to 332 BC.

The centre will cost more than €10 million and is funded through a loan agreement involving the Republic of Cyprus and the European Investment Bank.
