Paralimni-Deryneia municipality rejects Birdlife claims over controlled draining of Paralimni lake

Paralimni, Cyprus. The Paralimni-Deryneia municipality said the draining of Paralimni lake is being carried out in a controlled manner in cooperation with relevant authorities, rejecting allegations made by environmentalist group Birdlife.

Municipality cites monitoring and public health concerns

The municipality said discharges are managed through daily measurements and on-site inspections by relevant government agencies to maintain the required water level and protect the breeding of birds that remain in the area.
It said the measure was deemed necessary because water remaining in the sea for extended periods led to increased salinity, degradation of the aquifer, and serious public health risks due to stagnant water and increased mosquito populations.
“The discussion regarding lake Paralimni must be based on factual information, not misinformation,” the municipality said.

Long-term restoration measures and land issues

The municipality said it has advocated for action to protect the wetland for several years, including setting up a birdwatching observatory and requesting a comprehensive restoration study, as well as the expropriation of land so the state can legally proceed with management initiatives.
“The area requires a balance between environmental and ecosystem protection, public health, rational water management and respect for private property,” it said.

Birdlife warning on nesting season

Birdlife said on Tuesday that the native bird population of Paralimni lake is under threat during its reproductive season as water is being drained.
“This action takes place during the most critical period for the birds of the lake, their nesting period,” Birdlife said.
The group accused the government of proceeding with “unilateral drainage actions” and said species including the white-winged, the yellow-bellied and the white-tailed woodpecker nest during this period and depend on shallow waters and muddy margins for hatching their eggs.

What do you think should be prioritised in managing Paralimni lake during the nesting season?
