Paramount Skydance wins DOJ approval for $111 billion Warner Bros Discovery acquisition

Washington, United States. The United States Department of Justice has approved Paramount Skydance’s $111 billion acquisition of Warner Bros Discovery, clearing the way for the creation of a major entertainment conglomerate. The deal remains unfinished as states including California consider legal action to block the transaction.

Federal approval granted

According to a Justice Department announcement, the investigation into the deal was described as thorough and concluded that the merger is not expected to harm competition or consumers. The department said the transaction could potentially strengthen competition in the media and entertainment sector.

State-level opposition remains

Despite the federal clearance, the acquisition has not been finalized. States including California are considering legal action, citing concerns about further concentration of power in the entertainment industry.

Concerns from officials and industry professionals

California Attorney General Rob Bonta has expressed reservations about the merger’s effect on competition, noting that the sector has already experienced significant cuts and restructuring. More than 1,400 Hollywood professionals have signed a letter opposing the deal, saying further consolidation will restrict opportunities for creators and reduce choices for audiences.

Expected scope of the combined company

If completed, the new conglomerate is expected to acquire a large portfolio of media outlets and studios, including CNN, HBO, DC Studios, and other major brands, expanding its presence in the global entertainment market.
