Poll projects CTP to lead after next legislative elections and form north’s ruling coalition

Nicosia, Cyprus. A CMIRS poll released on Wednesday shows the centre-left CTP leading voting intention ahead of the next legislative elections and positioned to form the north’s ruling coalition. The poll surveyed 500 Turkish Cypriots during March.

Voting intention results

The poll found 33 per cent of respondents said they intend to vote for the CTP at the next election.

The UBP, the current largest party in the three-party nationalist ruling coalition, placed second with 16.9 per cent.

Junior coalition partner the YDP placed third with 7.9 per cent.

The pro-federation TDP, which lost all its seats in the legislature in 2022, registered 7.7 per cent support.

The centrist anti-corruption HP recorded 7.3 per cent, with its leader Kudret Ozersay having resigned from his seat in 2022.

Junior coalition party the DP was listed at 5.5 per cent.

Projected seat distribution and coalition scenarios

If the results were replicated on election day, the CTP would win 22 of the 50 seats in the Turkish Cypriot legislature.

Under the same projection, the UBP would win 11 seats, the YDP and the TDP would win five seats each, the HP would win four seats, and the DP would win three seats.

In that scenario, a CTP-TDP coalition would hold an effective majority of four, while including the HP would raise the majority to 12.

What do you think these poll results could mean for coalition-building after the next legislative elections?
