Pomos dam overflows after heavy rainfall as Cyprus reservoir levels remain critically low

Pomos, Cyprus. The Pomos dam overflowed on Saturday morning after recent heavy rainfall in the area, despite Cyprus facing a broader water crisis. Officials said the overflow was expected as the reservoir had nearly reached full capacity.

Overflow at Pomos dam

The Pomos dam has a capacity of 890,000 cubic metres and overflowed on Saturday morning following heavy rainfall in the region.

The Water Development Department’s Paphos district engineer Harris Kasioulis said the overflow was anticipated because the dam had almost reached full capacity on Friday. He said that although Pomos is one of Cyprus’ smaller dams, the overflow is significant after a dry year and offers “an optimistic outlook for what is to come.”

Islandwide reservoir levels remain low

The Water Development Department said total capacity in dams across Cyprus stood at 14.1% on Friday, down from 26% at the same time last year.

Total water volume fell from 75.61 billion cubic metres to 41.08 over the same period.

How do you think the overflow at Pomos dam should be viewed in the context of Cyprus’ wider water reserves?
