Pachna, Cyprus. Around 300 protesters gathered in Pachna on Tuesday morning to oppose the culling of animals amid a foot and mouth disease outbreak at a local farm. The demonstration was the second in a week.
Protest and previous gathering
The protest followed an earlier gathering in Pachna last Thursday by the newly formed association of livestock farmers, The Voice of Livestock Breeders.
Reporters allegedly attacked
During Tuesday’s protest, members of the group allegedly attacked a crew of reporters.
Talks fail to bring breakthrough
Consultations on Monday between veterinary services, livestock farmers and agricultural organisations failed to produce a major breakthrough. Farming representatives reiterated their demand for a meeting with President Nikos Christodoulides over the handling of the foot and mouth crisis.
