Quiet night reported near Akrotiri base after drone strike, amid panic and calls for information

Akrotiri, Cyprus. Communities around the Akrotiri British air base reported a quiet night following Monday’s Iranian-backed drone strike launched from Lebanon, though officials said residents panicked and contacted authorities for information.


Officials report calm after uneventful night

Curium mayor Pantelis Georgiou said on Tuesday that the situation was generally calm and that alarm levels had dropped because the night was quiet. Akrotiri deputy mayor Giorgos Constantinou also said the situation was calm.

Georgiou said people were going about their daily lives. Both Curium and Akrotiri reported an uneventful Monday night.

Panic and requests for information

Timi deputy mayor Giorgos Polykarpou stressed the importance of open channels of information and preparedness, adding that people panicked. He said he received hundreds of phone calls reflecting concern and uncertainty, with hundreds contacting local authorities for information.

Evacuation instructions and emergency coordination

Polykarpou said the community of Timi initially received instructions to evacuate and later for residents to remain in their homes. He said the situation highlighted the importance of proper coordination in emergencies and added that the incident could possibly constitute a useful lesson for Civil Defence.

Communities await information on bomb shelters

Dromolaxia-Meneou mayor Kypros Andronikou said communities in the area of Larnaca, including Tersefanou, Kiti, Pervolia and Meneou, were still awaiting information regarding local bomb shelters.
