Nicosia, Cyprus. Repairs to two electricity generation units at the Dhekelia and Vasiliko power stations are expected to be completed on Thursday, potentially restoring reserve capacity and helping prevent further power cuts.
If both units return to service as planned, available generation capacity will rise from 1,083 megawatts to 1,248MW, according to transmission system operator assistant operations director Haris Zavallis.
Reserve capacity
Zavallis told the Cyprus Mail that sufficient reserve capacity would be available if both units were repaired, eliminating the need for further power cuts. He said a clearer picture was expected by around 6pm.
Rotating outages
Four groups of consumers across Cyprus were affected by rotating power cuts on Wednesday, with outages lasting no longer than 25 minutes.
Domestic consumers are divided into 22 groups nationwide, enabling the transmission system operator to introduce rotating outages when necessary to protect electricity grid stability, Zavallis said.
Generator faults
Zavallis said the two units were ageing generators operating under a scheduled maintenance programme. He added that the extended period of high temperatures may also have contributed to the faults.
He said equipment failures remained within expected operational levels, with 36 generation-related faults recorded during 2025.
