London, United Kingdom. Keir Starmer may resign as early as tomorrow and announce the timeline of his withdrawal, according to a report by The Sunday Observer citing government sources, advisers and trade unionists. A source told The Observer that the prime minister remains focused on his duties.
Report outlines rising pressure
The report said Starmer’s position had become increasingly precarious over recent months and worsened sharply when his main opponent, Manchester mayor Andy Burnham, won a parliamentary seat earlier this week, enabling him to contest the Labour party leadership.
The Observer reported that Starmer concluded his position was no longer viable after advice from ministers, donors and close confidants.
Possible resignation announcement
According to the report, Starmer discussed the possibility of resignation with his wife at Chequers before making final decisions. Senior Labour officials cited by the report expect him to clarify his intentions by tomorrow.
On Friday, Starmer said he was ready to face any leadership challenge and urged his party not to dissolve itself through internal strife.
Political context
The Observer said Starmer had failed to deliver on promises of better living conditions and that, if he resigns, Britain would name its seventh leader in less than a decade, the highest number in almost two centuries.
The report described the United Kingdom as facing social turmoil over migration, inadequacies in public services and system failures, with public anger demanding change.
More than 100 Labour MPs, about a quarter of the party’s House of Commons representation, have called for Starmer’s resignation.
