Mammari, Cyprus. A female owl released from a wildlife care centre last year was found healthy with four newly hatched chicks, authorities announced on Monday. The bird was identified during a nest monitoring operation involving BirdLife Cyprus, the forestry department and Bird Focus.
Nest monitoring identifies rescued owl
The owl was found with a mate and her chicks in Mammari during the monitoring operation. After the female owl’s ring was checked, the code was traced to the Taşkent Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre in the Pentadaktylos mountains.
Treatment and release
The centre said the owl had been brought in during December 2024 while severely injured. She was later released back into the wild in March 2025.
Condition of the birds
BirdLife Cyprus said the female owl was in excellent condition and weighed 385g. Her mate was also ringed.
Response from BirdLife Cyprus
“It is wonderful proof that efforts to rescue and conserve wildlife can truly make a difference,” the organisation said in a social media post.
Return to the nest
The two parent owls were returned to their nest after the checkup.
