Kyiv, Ukraine. Russia launched another overnight ballistic missile attack on Kyiv, officials said on Wednesday, marking the third strike on the Ukrainian capital in less than a week. The attack comes as Ukraine faces a critical shortage of U.S.-made air-defence interceptors.
Attack on Kyiv
Officials said Russia fired five ballistic missiles and 169 drones at Ukraine overnight. Ukrainian air defences intercepted 139 of the drones, according to air force data, but did not shoot down any of the ballistic missiles.
Explosions were heard in Kyiv shortly before the air raid siren sounded, Reuters witnesses reported.
A woman was killed and two other people were wounded in the overnight attack on the capital, authorities said.
Damage and emergency response
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the strikes caused fires in a storage area and a non-residential building in two districts on opposite sides of the Dnipro River.
Reuters footage showed two warehouses on fire after the strikes, with firefighters using crane ladder platforms to battle the flames into the morning.
Wider military context
The latest attack coincided with a NATO summit underway in Ankara, where U.S. President Donald Trump was due to hold talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.
Moscow has intensified its air campaign against Ukraine in recent months as its ground advances have largely stalled and Ukrainian attacks on Russian military logistics and the oil industry have triggered widespread fuel shortages.
In July alone, Russian strikes on Kyiv and the surrounding region have killed 60 people. Since the start of the month, Ukrainian air defences have shot down four of the 54 ballistic missiles fired by Russia, according to air force data.
