Kyiv, Ukraine. Russia struck Ukraine’s capital with a large wave of missiles and drones on Sunday, damaging residential buildings, offices and schools and killing at least one person, officials said. Twenty-one people were injured in the attack, according to city authorities.
Attack on the capital
Explosions were heard in Kyiv just after 1 a.m. local time, after Ukraine’s air force warned on Telegram that Russia might launch a hypersonic Oreshnik ballistic missile. The air force did not respond to a request for comment on whether an Oreshnik hit any target during the attack.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on Telegram that one person was believed to have been killed after a nine-story residential building in the central Shevchenko district was hit. Emergency services were working at the site to put out a fire, he said.
Klitschko said 21 people were injured, including 13 who were hospitalized, three in serious condition. Air raid sirens sounded again in Kyiv after sunrise on Sunday.
Residents took shelter
Many residents spent the night in metro stations. Nataliia Zvarych, 62, said she had rushed to her local station as explosions began.
“It was terrifying, scary,” she said. “We have been sitting here for more than three hours now, listening to the explosions up there.”
In Shevchenko, several people were trapped inside an air raid shelter at a school after debris blocked the entrance, Klitschko said.
The head of the city’s military administration said more people were believed to be trapped inside a shelter at a business centre in the same district. He said more than 40 locations in the city had been damaged.
Damage reported beyond Kyiv
Strikes were also reported in other parts of Ukraine. Mykola Kalashnyk, the governor of the Kyiv region, said three more people were injured in the broader region.
How many more strikes have to hit before the war ends?
