Kyiv, Ukraine. Russian strikes around the Ukrainian capital overnight killed 14 people, injured 27 and damaged warehouses, emergency service officials said.
Air raid alerts lasted for more than an hour across Kyiv, a city of about three million people, as the assault began after midnight.
Damage and rescue operations
Kyiv’s military administration said seven locations were struck. Authorities reported that one person was killed and 24 others were injured in several parts of the city.
Mayor Vitali Klitschko said rescuers pulled two people from the ruins of a warehouse near the city centre that was destroyed in the attack.
“There may still be people under the rubble,” Klitschko wrote on Telegram, adding that search and rescue operations were continuing.
An ambulance driver was among those injured, while four people remained in critical condition, he said.
Fires and ammonia leak
Klitschko said the strikes caused fires at warehouses and storage facilities. Initial reports that a 20-storey apartment building had caught fire were inaccurate, he added.
A large fire broke out on the outskirts of Kyiv, while debris from a fallen missile landed beside a residential building.
The Kyiv military administration said the attack also caused an ammonia leak that emergency crews were working to contain.
Russian statement
Russia’s defence ministry said on Wednesday that it had struck logistics hubs and supply centres in Kyiv and surrounding areas, alleging they were being used for military purposes.
