Kharkiv, Ukraine. Russian drones and missiles struck Ukraine’s second-largest city late on Monday, cutting electricity during freezing winter weather, while officials said 23 people were wounded in an overnight drone attack on the southern city of Odesa.
Kharkiv hit, power outage reported
Kharkiv Regional Governor Oleh Syniehubov said two people were injured and two schools were damaged in the attack. Unofficial Telegram channels posted images showing the eastern city, about 30 km (18 miles) from the Russian border, in darkness.
Syniehubov said the energy system came under attack, causing serious damage, and that repair crews were working to address the impact. He added that about 80% of the city of Kharkiv and the Kharkiv region was without electricity, and said the continuing threat of further air raids was complicating repair efforts.
Air force reports large drone launch
The Ukrainian air force said on Tuesday that Russian troops had launched 165 drones, of which 135 were neutralised by air defence units.
Odesa drone attack leaves 23 injured
Officials said Russia carried out a “massive” drone attack on Odesa overnight. Serhiy Lysak, head of the city’s military administration, reported the attack, while regional governor Oleh Kiper said that of the 23 injured, nine people, including two children and a pregnant woman, were hospitalised.
Kiper said people could still be trapped under the rubble.
