Russian strikes kill two in Ukraine as Kyiv faces ballistic missile attack

Kyiv, Ukraine. Russian forces launched a ballistic missile attack on Kyiv early on Sunday and later struck other Ukrainian regions, killing two people, Ukrainian authorities said. Russia said four civilians were killed in a Ukrainian drone strike on the Russian-occupied city of Horlivka.

Missile and drone attacks

Ukraine’s air force said Russia launched seven ballistic missiles and 136 drones at Ukraine overnight, with Kyiv among the targets. Explosions were reported in the capital.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said a fire broke out on the seventh and eighth floors of a multi-storey apartment building in a central district following the overnight missile attack. Three people were wounded in Kyiv.

President Volodymyr Zelenskiy had warned on Friday that Russian attacks were likely over the following 48 hours.

Casualties in Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia

In the eastern city of Kharkiv, one person was killed and 12 others required medical attention after a daytime drone attack.

A glide bomb attack in the southern city of Zaporizhzhia killed one person and wounded six others. The city has faced heavy bombardment in recent months.

Russian claims from occupied territory

In Horlivka, in the Russian-occupied part of Ukraine’s Donetsk province, Russian-installed Mayor Ivan Prikhodko said four civilians were killed in a Ukrainian drone strike, according to Russia’s TASS news agency. He provided no further details.

On Saturday, Russian-installed authorities accused Ukraine of deliberately targeting civilians after 12 people were killed in a drone attack on a holiday camp in a Russian-held part of Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region.

Both Russia and Ukraine deny targeting civilians in the war launched by Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. Thousands of civilians have been killed, most of them Ukrainians in Russian attacks.
