Several dead and six missing after Brussels construction site fire

Brussels, Belgium. Several people died in a fire at a construction site in central Brussels on Tuesday, while authorities continued searching for six missing workers.

An unspecified number of bodies were found in one of two elevators at the renovation project on Place de Brouckere, according to the local labour inspection service.

Search operation continues

Labour inspection spokesman Brecht Speybrouck said authorities had gained limited access to one of the elevator cabins and saw the bodies of two or three people.

Six workers remained unaccounted for, while the cause of the fire had not been determined, he said.

More than 200 workers at site

The Brussels fire brigade said more than 200 workers had been at the site when the fire broke out. Three people were taken to hospital.

Fire spread through elevator shafts

Belgian broadcaster VRT, citing the fire brigade, reported that an initial fire on lower floors of the renovation project was contained relatively quickly.

However, flames travelled through the elevator shafts and triggered another fire on an underground floor, firefighters said.
