Limassol, Cyprus. Shakespeare at Curium will return to the ancient amphitheatre of Curium on July 9, 10 and 11 with performances of Othello in English. The long-running open-air series by Performing Arts for Cyprus Charities has been staged at the venue since 1962.
Long-running summer tradition
For more than six decades, Shakespeare at Curium has attracted audiences from across Cyprus and abroad, combining Shakespearean theatre with the island’s classical heritage. The ancient amphitheatre, overlooking the Mediterranean, serves as the setting for the live performances.
Recent productions have included Antony and Cleopatra, King Lear, The Taming of the Shrew and The Tempest. This year’s staging marks only the third time that Othello has been performed at Curium.
The play
Written around 1603, Othello is regarded as one of Shakespeare’s most psychologically intense tragedies. The play centres on Othello, a Moorish general in the service of Venice, whose secret marriage to Desdemona is undermined by his ensign Iago after Iago is passed over for promotion.
Iago uses deception, false evidence and manipulation to inflame Othello’s insecurities and jealousy, leading to tragic consequences. The work addresses themes including jealousy, prejudice, race, honour, love and loyalty.
Cyprus setting
The play is set in Cyprus, making the Curium amphitheatre a fitting venue for the production.
Charitable proceeds and event details
Performing Arts for Cyprus Charities said the production will continue its founding mission of supporting charitable causes through fundraising. This year’s beneficiaries are the Cyprus Alzheimer’s Association and The Margarita Liasidou Foundation.
Othello is directed by Linda Crawshaw. Performances will take place at the Curium amphitheatre in Limassol district at 8pm, in English. Tickets are available from Sold Out Tickets, Stefanis Stores and The Clothing Lounge in Chlorakas.
