Larnaca, Cyprus. A South Korean tourist couple said their legally parked rental car was damaged during violent clashes between fan groups before Thursday’s AEK Larnaca-Beitar Jerusalem match.
The couple filed a report with police and said they now faced substantial repair costs for the vehicle.
Tourists report vandalism
“Before the match, violent clashes erupted between fan groups near the stadium. Our legally parked rental vehicle became a victim of random vandalism during the riot,” the couple said.
They said the incident highlighted the risks to bystanders during football-related violence, adding that tourists could suffer damage and financial loss despite having no involvement in the disturbances.
“It remains deeply concerning that peaceful tourists can face such violence and financial loss in public space during football events,” they said.
Police response
Police confirmed to the Cyprus Mail that an incident occurred between supporters of the two teams outside the stadium before the match began.
A 24-year-old fan remained in custody on suspicion of assaulting a police officer, police said.
Police also said a water cannon vehicle was deployed during the clashes, which were brought under control following their intervention. Local media reports that seven people had been arrested could not be confirmed.
