Spain says it is deeply concerned about Cyprus division, ambassador says

Nicosia, Cyprus. Spain is deeply concerned about the ongoing division of Cyprus, Spain’s new ambassador in Nicosia Mercedes Alonso Frayle said on Friday. She made the remarks after presenting her credentials to President Nikos Christodoulides.

Support for Cyprus territorial integrity and UN framework

Alonso Frayle said that, as a close friend of Cyprus, Spain is deeply concerned about the division of the island since the military intervention of 1974 and the consequences of that division for both communities.

She said Spain strongly supports the territorial integrity of Cyprus, free from any international interference, and supports the United Nations’ efforts towards a bicommunal, bizonal federation with political equality.

Alonso Frayle said she hopes that in the near future the parties involved will resume the negotiation process within the framework of UN Security Council resolutions.

Academic interest and bilateral ties

She said Spanish students are increasingly attracted to the academic environment of Cyprus and that there remains room for encouraging exchanges between peoples.

Alonso Frayle said relations between Spain and Cyprus have a long history, and that during her term as ambassador she will seek to maintain and further deepen the relations between the two countries.

What developments would you like to see next in efforts to resume Cyprus reunification talks?
