Madrid, Spain. A Spaniard evacuated from the MV Hondius cruise ship and quarantined at a military hospital in Madrid has tested positive for hantavirus, Spain’s Health Ministry said on Monday. The case involved one of 14 Spanish nationals who disembarked from the vessel in Tenerife earlier this month after an outbreak was reported onboard.
Outbreak report
The ship was carrying around 150 passengers and crew from 23 countries. It notified the World Health Organisation of the outbreak on May 2.
Medical isolation
Authorities said the infected person was already under medical isolation when the positive result was confirmed. The ministry said in a statement on social media platform X that the patient had been transferred to an isolation unit at Gomez Ulla Hospital.
Public risk
The ministry said the risk to the wider population was not increasing because the case had been identified among people already in quarantine.
