Storm damage prompts emergency works and bridge closure on Ayios Tychonas coastal walkway

Limassol, Cyprus. Amathus municipality said emergency works are needed on the Ayios Tychonas coastal walkway after a severe sea storm caused further damage to the already deteriorated site. Authorities have closed a wooden pedestrian bridge along the route due to safety concerns.

Storm damage and immediate closure

The latest storm damage intensified safety concerns, particularly at the wooden pedestrian bridge, which has been closed to the public. Municipal authorities said pedestrian access to the bridge has been prohibited with immediate effect, pending a full technical assessment and restoration works. The closure followed visible structural damage attributed to heavy seas.

Long-term deterioration

The walkway, described as one of the most frequented coastal paths in Limassol, has suffered extensive wear after decades without comprehensive maintenance.

Municipality plans redesign and reconstruction

Mayor Kyriakos Xidias said the situation could no longer be addressed through limited repairs. “The condition of the pedestrian walkway no longer allows for half measures,” he said, adding: “Highlighting the reality is the first step towards the solution.”

Xidias said the municipality intends to move forward with a complete redesign and reconstruction of the promenade. “We assume our responsibility to proceed with a proper redesign and a comprehensive reconstruction that will make the pedestrian walkway a jewel for Cyprus,” he said.
