Nicosia, Cyprus. Torrential rain, thunderstorms and hail affected parts of Cyprus on Friday, causing hazardous road conditions and power disruptions, with unsettled weather expected to persist through the weekend.
Heavy rain and hail reported
Torrential rain was recorded in various parts of Cyprus, leading to water accumulation on roads. Hail was observed in the Zygi area.
Police warning to drivers
Police urged drivers to exercise caution, including reducing speed, maintaining safe distances from vehicles ahead, and keeping headlights on due to reduced visibility and slippery road surfaces.
Power outages linked to reduced solar output
The sudden deterioration in weather conditions led to power outages in several areas. Speaking to AlphaNews.Live, Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) spokesperson Christina Papadopoulou said abrupt cloud cover reduced solar energy production, halting photovoltaic generation and causing electricity demand to exceed supply. She said the system automatically disconnects consumers in stages to restore balance.
Flight diversion and local observations
A Sky Express plane changed course and flew over the northern part of Cyprus to avoid the storm, according to Flight Radar. Residents in Limassol’s Ayios Ioannis area captured thunder and lightning, while muddy rain prevailed earlier in the day.
