Larnaca, Cyprus. Student housing for Tepak and the opening of the university’s marine sciences school in Larnaca were discussed at the House education committee meeting on Wednesday.
Student housing timeline for Tepak
Disy MP Prodromos Alambritis said after the meeting that the projects were expected to progress, with the first students expected in the city in 2027.
Plans presented to MPs said 500 beds would be available to Tepak students by 2027, in line with the opening of Tepak’s marine sciences school, which is under construction in Larnaca.
The first 150 beds are scheduled to be ready by this summer, with the remaining 350 beds to be completed in 2027.
Greek university departments planned for September
Alambritis said the government planned for two departments of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, which are set to open in Larnaca, to start operating in September, but added he was not certain this would be possible.
“I am not sure if we will succeed,” he said.
Plans for the creation of the Greek university’s branches were approved by the government in September 2025, making it the first Greek university branch to operate in Cyprus.
Efforts to address housing and support for Athienou proposal
Diko MP Andreas Apostolou said efforts were under way to find a solution to the ongoing issue of student housing ahead of the anticipated autumn opening of the departments.
He said he backed proposals for a veterinary school in Athienou, as suggested by the municipality in cooperation with the University of Thessaly.
Apostolou said the education ministry had assured him that questions regarding construction of the facility building would be resolved in the coming weeks, and that a proposal to convert the Athienou medical centre building for this purpose had been submitted to the health ministry.
What impact do you think the planned housing projects will have on students moving to Larnaca?
