Student housing projects reshape Nicosia’s historic old city

Nicosia, Cyprus. Efforts to revitalise Nicosia’s historic old city have continued for decades, with a growing number of buildings now being renovated into student dormitories.

Renovations signal shift in the old city

More signs have recently appeared on streets in Nicosia’s historical centre indicating the renovation of existing buildings into student accommodation, pointing to changing social dynamics in the area.

Municipal and private sector projects

Nicosia mayor Charalambos Prountzos said the municipality is developing two student housing projects, one of which is already delivered and operating, with another expected by June. He added that the private sector is also independently developing several projects, with about 250 beds expected to enter the market.

Housing linked to NKUA branch expansion

The completed municipal student housing near Ledra street currently houses students from the new Cypriot branch of the Greek National Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), whose classrooms are located next to the municipal hall. Prountzos said that for now the branch has only a medical school and around 50 students.

Other developments affecting progress

Prountzos said the opening and planned expansion of the NKUA branch has significantly influenced the progress of student housing projects, along with the repurposing of the former Phaneromeni school, which had been discussed for years.

How do you think the influx of students will affect daily life in Nicosia’s historic centre?
