Suspended Paphos mayor to appear in Limassol court on April 2 in rape allegation case

Limassol, Cyprus. Suspended Paphos mayor Phedonas Phedonos is set to face his first court proceedings on April 2 at the Limassol district court in a criminal case involving allegations of rape. The case concerns incidents alleged to have occurred in Paphos.

Transfer of case and first appearance

The case was transferred to Limassol after authorities determined that a trial in the local district might compromise impartiality. The registry office confirmed that April 2 will mark Phedonos’ first appearance, during which he will be served with the indictment and the referral process to the criminal court will take place.

Charges outlined in the indictment

The indictment reportedly includes four felony charges, including rape, sexual assault and roaming while intoxicated with intent to commit a crime.

Investigation and evidence review

Police investigations drew on statements from more than ten witnesses, along with a detailed account provided by the alleged victim. Phedonos gave a lengthy statement to investigators about one month ago, accompanied by his lawyers.

Authorities examined supporting evidence, including medical documentation and witness testimony, before forwarding the case to the legal service. The legal service issued instructions for prosecution after completing its evaluation, signalling the formal start of criminal proceedings.

How the case resurfaced

The case resurfaced earlier this year following accusations by Paphos-based businessman Theodoros Aristodemou, a land developer who has had prior legal disputes with the Paphos municipality, and who alleged that Phedonos committed the offences around 2014. The legal service evaluated the completed case file and authorised prosecution based on the gathered evidence.

What developments will you be watching for when Phedonos appears in court on April 2?
