Larnaca, Cyprus. A 45-year-old Syrian was remanded for three days on Tuesday after allegedly kidnapping his two teenage children for six months. He was arrested on Monday upon arriving at Larnaca airport with his 16-year-old and 17-year-old children.
Travel arrangements
According to Philenews, the children’s mother had consented to their father travelling with them from December 21 to 29. She was later informed that he had taken them to Syria instead and filed a complaint with Limassol police in January.
Father’s account
The man reportedly admitted that he went to Saudia Arabia with his children on December 27, but instead of returning two days later as planned, decided to travel to Syria to show them his home country. He reportedly said the children’s mother was not told about the change in plans because he feared she would disagree.
Delay in return
He also reportedly said the return to Cyprus was further delayed after he injured his foot in Syria, leaving him unable to travel for about two months.
Children’s contact with mother
While in Syria, the children contacted their mother and expressed fear over their father’s behaviour. They asked her to take the necessary steps to bring them back to Cyprus.
Police investigation
Police later contacted the father online, who reportedly said he would return to Cyprus but leave his children in Syria. Investigations are ongoing.
