TechIsland completes wildfire recovery phase in Souni under Cyprus 2025 programme

Souni, Cyprus. TechIsland announced this week that it has completed another phase of its wildfire recovery programme in Souni, part of an initiative launched after the 2025 summer wildfires in Cyprus.

Programme scope and support

The non-profit association said the programme is backed by contributions from more than 60 technology companies and individuals and focuses on fire prevention, ecological recovery and community support.

Work carried out in Souni

TechIsland said approximately 1,000,000 square metres of forest in Souni were destroyed by last summer’s fires. After private contractors removed burned trees, substantial quantities of branches and debris remained scattered across the ground.

Over 22 working days, TechIsland said it coordinated the collection and processing of the biomass using a woodchipping machine.

Mulch reuse and priorities

The resulting mulch is being reused on-site to improve soil moisture retention, reduce erosion and support the broader ecological recovery of the forest, the association said.

TechIsland said priority was given to zones closest to residential areas, where uncleared biomass combined with dry grass represented the most immediate fire threat to homes and families ahead of the summer of 2026.

What impact do you think on-site mulching will have on reducing fire risks near residential areas?
