The UN Security Council plans to extend the mandate for peacekeeping troops due to continuing negotiations.

The resolution to extend the mandate will be, most likely, extended during the meeting of the UNSC on 23rd of January. Before the meeting, the Special advisor on Cyprus Mr. Espen Barth Eide will report about the progress of the negotiations a a closed conference. A separate report about the peacekeeping troops is not expected, due to the upcoming negotiations in Geneva.

Quite recently, President Anastasiades and leader of Turkish-Cypriots Mustafa Akinci agreed to meet in Geneva in order to discuss the matters of guarantees and territories.

The special representative of the UN Secretary General and the Head of the UN Military forces in Cyprus Mrs. Elizabeth Spechar also expressed her hope in the soonest resolution of the Cyprus problem.
