Mexico City, Mexico. Three people died from suffocation during World Cup celebrations in Mexico City, the capital’s health secretariat said early Wednesday. The fatalities occurred near the Angel of Independence, where thousands had gathered after Mexico’s 2-0 win over Ecuador in the round of 32.
Deaths reported near celebration site
Emergency teams attended to three unconscious people at different locations around Paseo de la Reforma, according to authorities. The boulevard and surrounding streets had been closed to traffic and prepared for the soccer celebrations.
The health authority initially said on social media that a 44-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman died from suffocation after receiving advanced resuscitation efforts.
In a later post, the secretariat said a third victim, a 48-year-old woman, suffered asphyxiation on a nearby street and died after being taken to hospital.
Officials respond
Mayor Clara Brugada expressed condolences to the victims’ families on X and urged people to “always celebrate with responsibility, care, and empathy”.
Victory sparks mass celebrations
Mexicans took to the streets after the national team ended a 40-year wait for a World Cup knockout victory at Azteca Stadium in the capital. The win over Ecuador sent the co-hosts into the last 16.
Images shared on social media showed emergency responders and paramedics assisting distressed people lying on the ground in nearby streets, contrasting with the cheering and chants of celebrating fans.

Mexico City’s metropolitan area, with more than 20 million residents, is one of the world’s most populous urban areas and is accustomed to large celebrations and heavy crowds.
