Trump pledges additional 5,000 U.S. troops to Poland ahead of NATO ministers meeting in Sweden

Helsingborg, Sweden. U.S. President Donald Trump said he will send an additional 5,000 troops to Poland, a move that surprised NATO allies hours before U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio was due to meet alliance ministers in Sweden amid divisions over the Iran war.

Trump links troop decision to ties with Polish president

In a Truth Social post, Trump cited his relationship with Poland’s conservative nationalist president, Karol Nawrocki, as the reason for the deployment. Trump wrote that the decision was based on the election of Nawrocki, whom he said he had endorsed, and their relationship.

Shift follows weeks of criticism of NATO members

The pledge came after weeks in which Trump criticised NATO members for not doing more to help the U.S.-Israeli military campaign. Trump has said he is considering withdrawing from the alliance and questioned whether Washington was bound to honour its mutual defence pact.

Rubio criticises allies over bases, singles out Spain

Before leaving for the NATO foreign ministers meeting in Helsingborg, Rubio said Trump was “very disappointed” in alliance members that had not allowed the U.S. to use bases on their territory for the war, singling out Spain. Speaking to reporters in Miami, Rubio questioned Spain’s stance and said the issue needed to be discussed, while adding that other NATO countries had been very helpful.

NATO officials cite alliance role and existing support

NATO officials have stressed the United States did not ask the 32-member alliance to take part in the Iran war. They said many members have honoured commitments to allow U.S. forces to use their airspace and bases on their territory.

European concerns also linked to Greenland push

European concerns about Trump’s attitude toward NATO were exacerbated this year by Trump’s push to acquire Greenland, a territory of NATO member Denmark.

Europeans expected to offer help on Hormuz and security

At the gathering in Helsingborg, European ministers are expected to stress they are ready to help with freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz when conditions permit and to take more responsibility for European security. Iran has restricted traffic through the strait during the war.
