Trump rejects Iran proposal as conflict drags on and pressures mount ahead of U.S. midterms

Washington, United States. More than two months into an inconclusive conflict, President Donald Trump faces the risk that a standoff with Iran could drag on indefinitely and leave a larger problem for the United States and the world.

With both sides projecting confidence and their positions far apart, Trump rejected a new Iranian proposal to restart negotiations on Friday.

No clear off-ramp despite renewed contacts

Iran submitted a fresh proposal to resume talks, which Trump quickly dismissed. The lack of an obvious path to de-escalation has persisted even as Tehran advanced new ideas through intermediaries.

Fears of a prolonged deadlock have grown since Trump called off a trip by his negotiators to Islamabad last weekend and later rejected an Iranian offer to halt the war, which has been suspended since April 8 under a ceasefire agreement.

Economic and political pressure on the administration

An unresolved conflict would likely mean continued global economic fallout, including high U.S. gasoline prices. The article says those pressures have intensified as Trump’s poll numbers fall and as Republican candidates face headwinds ahead of November’s midterm congressional elections.

War goals and military impacts

The conflict has not delivered a decisive military or diplomatic outcome. While waves of U.S. and Israeli strikes are described as having heavily degraded Iran’s military capabilities, the report says several of Trump’s often-shifting objectives—ranging from regime change to blocking Iran’s path to a nuclear weapon—remain unfulfilled.

Strait of Hormuz at the center of negotiations

Tehran proposed setting aside discussion of its nuclear program until the conflict is formally ended and a deal is reached on reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Trump rejected that approach, insisting the nuclear issue be addressed at the outset.

State news agency IRNA reported on Friday that Iran had sent a revised proposal through Pakistani mediators, which contributed to a decline in global oil prices after they had risen sharply since Iran effectively closed the strait. Trump said he was “not satisfied” with the offer but noted there were ongoing phone contacts.

The report says that failing to wrest the key oil-shipping waterway from Iranian control at the conclusion of the conflict would be a major blow to Trump’s legacy.

How do you think a prolonged standoff over the Strait of Hormuz would affect U.S. politics and global energy markets?
