Washington, United States. President Donald Trump said Iran had asked the United States for a ceasefire, while Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson rejected the claim as false and baseless.
Trump’s statements
Trump made the claim in a Truth Social post on Wednesday, saying Washington would consider a ceasefire request once the Strait of Hormuz was “open, free, and clear.” He added, “Until then, we are blasting Iran into oblivion.”
In the post, Trump referred to “Iran’s New Regime President” and said he had asked for a ceasefire, but Trump did not specify who he had spoken to.
Trump also referred to a “new president” in an interview with Reuters shortly before sharing his social media post.
Iran’s response and leadership context
Iran’s foreign ministry spokesperson said Trump’s statement about a ceasefire request was false and baseless.
Iran has a new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, who last month succeeded his father after his death in an air strike. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian took office in July 2024.
What do you think is the significance of Trump tying any ceasefire consideration to the Strait of Hormuz being “open, free, and clear”?
