Trump says U.S. will briefly pause Hormuz escort operation amid Iran agreement talks

Washington, United States. President Donald Trump said the United States would briefly pause an operation to help escort ships through the Strait of Hormuz, citing “great progress” toward a comprehensive agreement with Iran. The strait has been virtually shut since the conflict began, disrupting about 20% of world oil supplies.

Trump announces temporary pause

Trump wrote on social media that the United States and Iran had “mutually agreed” to pause “Project Freedom” for a short period to see whether an agreement could be finalized and signed, while saying the blockade would remain in effect.

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on what progress had been made or how long the pause would last.

Rubio details escort effort and U.S. stance

Earlier on Tuesday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio outlined an effort that began on Monday to escort stranded tankers out of the Gulf. Rubio and other senior administration officials said Iran could not be allowed to control traffic through the strait.

Rubio told reporters at the White House that the United States had achieved its objectives in its military campaign, launched on February 28 alongside Israel.

Military actions and oil market reaction

Iran has effectively sealed off the strait by threatening to deploy mines, drones, missiles and fast-attack craft. The United States has countered by blockading Iranian ports and mounting escorted transits for commercial vessels.

The U.S. military said on Monday it destroyed several Iranian small boats, as well as cruise missiles and drones.

After Trump’s post, U.S. crude oil futures fell $2.30 and dropped below $100 per barrel.

No immediate response from Tehran

There was no immediate reaction from Tehran, where it was early Wednesday morning.

What do you think the temporary pause could mean for shipping through the Strait of Hormuz?
