Turin, Italy. About 30 people were injured in clashes in Turin after masked rioters attacked police during a protest against the eviction of the occupied Askatasuna social centre. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni condemned what she called “unacceptable” violence as police detained 10 people.
Protest over Askatasuna eviction escalates
The violence erupted as activists marched to protest the clearing of the “Askatasuna” building, a municipal property occupied for nearly three decades. What began as a demonstration escalated into clashes in which rioters attacked police with hammers and improvised explosives.
Officer injured; authorities condemn attacks
Footage cited by Meloni showed a lone officer surrounded and struck while pinned to the ground. The officer was taken to hospital for emergency care, and doctors said the injuries were not life-threatening.
Injuries reported and detentions made
Reports from Turin said roughly 30 people were injured during the clashes, with most of those injured being law enforcement personnel. Police detained 10 individuals as investigations continued into the hammer attack and the organised rioting.
