Nicosia, Cyprus. Turkish Cypriots and other Muslims across Cyprus celebrated the beginning of Eid al-Adha, one of the two main festivals in the Muslim calendar, on Wednesday. The festival began with prayers performed in Cyprus at 6:15 a.m.
Religious observances
Eid al-Adha is observed during Dhu al-Hijja, the final month of the Islamic calendar, when many Muslims travel to Mecca for the Hajj pilgrimage.
Political attendance
Former Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar attended prayers at the newly constructed Millet mosque in the northern sector of Ayios Dhometios. Turkish Cypriot “prime minister” Unal Ustel attended prayers at the Zafer Bolkan mosque in the village of Karavas in the Kyrenia district.
Public event
Later in the day, incumbent Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman opened his official residence to the public. An event was held inside the grounds, and attendees were given the opportunity to meet him.
