Turkish police officer dies after being attacked at Ankara garage, new footage emerges

Ankara, Turkey. A 44-year-old police officer, Okan Keskin, has died after suffering a brain haemorrhage three days following an assault at a garage in Ankara, as new footage of the incident emerged.

Incident captured on CCTV

CCTV footage showed a car graze Keskin, prompting a reaction from the officer. The driver then punched Keskin, leaving him visibly dazed, and a group of garage employees joined the attack.

Keskin later reached a hospital, where doctors identified a 7mm brain shift and warned of potential paralysis. He underwent emergency surgery but died in hospital.

Family account of final call

Keskin’s wife, Emel, said her husband called her from his hospital bed and told her he had suffered a brain haemorrhage and was being taken for surgery. She said he described being beaten by a group of 20 to 30 people.

Emel told Turkish media that he held her hand, told her he loved her, and asked her to look after their children.

Company response

Following public outcry, the company TUVTurk said it had terminated the contracts of two identified employees involved in the beating.

What impact do you think the newly released footage will have on the investigation and accountability in this case?
