Two Greek Cypriots detained in north over alleged crossing and military zone violations

Nicosia, Cyprus. Two young Greek Cypriots, a man and a woman, were detained in the north on Sunday over allegations that they failed to complete entry procedures at a crossing point and entered a restricted military zone.

They are expected to appear before a court on Monday.

Alleged crossing procedure violation

According to Turkish Cypriot news website Lefka Haber, the two, described as friends, entered the north through the Pyrgos/Limnitis crossing point but allegedly continued their journey without completing the required procedures at the checkpoint.

The report said Turkish Cypriot police later stopped and arrested them over the alleged failure to comply with legal entry procedures.

Military zone allegation

During subsequent investigations, authorities also alleged that the pair had entered a restricted military zone.

Cyprus Police spokesman Vyron Vyronos told the Cyprus Mail that the necessary steps are being taken through the bicommunal committee to clarify the incident.
