Tehran, Iran. U.S. and Pakistani leaders said a long-delayed framework agreement aimed at ending months of fighting between the United States and Iran could be signed on Sunday, but Iranian officials indicated the timing remained uncertain. Iranian state media and sources said Tehran had not yet made a final decision, while hardline protesters voiced opposition.
Planned signing faces uncertainty
President Donald Trump said the agreement with Iran was scheduled to be signed on Sunday, which is his 80th birthday. Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said Islamabad was preparing for an electronic signing, to be followed by technical-level talks in the coming week.
Before Trump’s post, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei said on Saturday, according to state media, that it would “not be tomorrow” but could happen “in the coming days.”
Iran’s Fars news agency, citing an informed source, reported on Sunday that Tehran had not yet taken a final decision on the framework agreement. It said political, legal and technical aspects were still under review at expert and decision-making levels.
Qatari mediators travel to Tehran
Qatari negotiators flew to Tehran on Sunday morning as part of efforts to finalize the agreement, a source with knowledge of the situation told Reuters.
Focus on Strait of Hormuz
Trump wrote on Truth Social that after a framework deal is signed, the Strait of Hormuz, which he said Iran had blocked, would immediately be “open to all.”
Sources on all sides of the talks said that once the strait reopens, the United States would lift its naval blockade. They said negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program, which Trump has cited as a key reason for the war, would take place afterwards.
Conflict and domestic impact
Since February 28, U.S. and Israeli bombings have heavily degraded Iran’s military-industrial base and damaged its military, according to the article. Experts said the war had also entrenched the dominance of Iran’s hardline Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
When the United States and Israel launched the war, Trump called on Iranians to rise up and take over state institutions.
