UN Secretary General António Guterres recommended extending the presence of UN peacekeepers on the island until 31st January next year. In his report to the Security Council, he also noted that the armed forces of United Nations guarantee peace and safety on the island.

As reported earlier, the mandate for UN peacekeepers’ presence in Cyprus is extended every six months. According to 2016 data, there are about 900 “blue helmets” on the island: more than 800 military and 67 police officers.

UN troops arrived in the republic for the first time in 1964.
