Nicosia, Cyprus. UN undersecretary-general for peacekeeping operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix on Tuesday called for calm in the buffer zone after meeting President Nikos Christodoulides. He said Unficyp is working to de-escalate tensions following fears of heightened tensions last week.

Call for de-escalation

Lacroix said the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus is making efforts aimed at “de-escalating the tension” in the buffer zone and stressed that it is “important that calm prevails”.

Visit to the Green Line

Earlier in the day, Unficyp chief Khassim Diagne took Lacroix on a helicopter tour of the Green Line near the village of Pyla, where tensions were heightened last week.
